With Generative Fill, Adobe Photoshop takes AI to a whole new level

A simple toggle of the affected layer in the layers panel is all it takes to revert any changes, ensuring that the user always has control over the final output. The generative fill tool lets you completely change any image and is super simple to use. To access Photoshop and try out the generative fill tool, all you need is three simple steps. Once you’re in, you can use text prompts to generate objects, edit images and more. Combining photos is another great way to use Photoshop AI’s generative fill feature. We’ll show you an example with two video game character images created in Midjourney.

One of the key features introduced is Generative Fill, which is currently in beta testing but will be available to the general public later this year. Extending a photo, removing objects, and even changing a background all use the existing image for context. Adding an object, on the other hand, requires the AI to extend itself past what is already known. VanceAI is an AI-based photo editing platform with tools to improve, enlarge, and modify your pictures. VanceAI is a subscription-based service, but there is a free trial available. This was my favorite photo from the entire burst sequence, but the placement of the duck leaves much to be desired (at least in my book).

Click ‘Generative Fill’ and you’ll be invited to enter a prompt. Installations are handled within the Creative Cloud app, with the download time depending on your internet speed. Adobe applications are fairly large, so make sure you have enough space on your computer before starting the download process.

The Generative Fill tool in Photoshop utilizes complex AI algorithms to fill the selected area with the requested image elements. If the selected area is too large, this might result in processing delays due to the higher computational requirements. Therefore, if I really want to print on canvas without having my image cropped, extending the edges is best. It doesn’t need to be perfect looking, but it can do wonders for these sorts of prints, particularly if your aspect ratio doesn’t exactly fit the frame perfectly.

AI image generators have risen in popularity and quality along with generative text chatbots like ChatGPT in recent months, but disputes over copyrighted images being used have also led to lawsuits. Adobe Photoshop is joining the generative artificial intelligence boom ignited by OpenAI’s popular ChatGPT. In such cases, consider using a different image with a higher resolution. High-quality images provide more data for the AI algorithms to work with, resulting in better fills and a smoother user experience.

The new Adobe Photoshop Generative Fill tool is continuing to blow minds as people find more use cases for the powerful Firefly AI-driven feature. Available in Photoshop Beta, Generative Fill allows users to transform objects, backgrounds and more using text prompts. Adobe’s Firefly generative AI was trained on Adobe’s own library of stock images, as well as other licensed Yakov Livshits and public domain images. She said bringing the capabilities of AI image creation and editing into Photoshop is an “incredible new capability” for creators. This time, I thought I would attempt to extend my image using Generative Fill. I found that since this was a full-sized photo, extending my selection by 30 pixels into the original photo yielded the best results.

This only works, of course, if you have something clear in mind. Otherwise, you may appreciate the tool’s randomness, and you can be deliberately vague just to see what you get. Click on Generative Fill to activate the tool, but leave the text field blank. When I took this flower photo, I was actually trying to photograph a bee, but it flew away before I could fire the shutter. Click on the Generative Fill option and type whatever you want to create. Give Generative Fill a go so you can understand the potential and limitations of this new tool.

Enter a description of the object you would like to have generated in the Generative Fill taskbar. The Gerenative Fill button will automatically appear when you have an active selection. A breakthrough in design and editing as it gives photo editors and designers the option to rapidly create a plethora of new works. With everything set and Adobe Creative Cloud installed, let’s begin signing up for the AI generative beta. This will take you to the Adobe Firefly dashboard, where you can try the generative fill feature.

Selecting a region changes the language and/or content on Adobe.com. With this release of Photoshop, you’ll have access to a generative AI model that is ethically sourced via Adobe Stock. Select an area in your image, then describe what you’d like to add.

• Utilize any selection tool available in Photoshop to choose the specific part of your image you want to work with.
• As we’ll see, Photoshop fills the extended area with original AI-generated content that matches the lighting, the shadows, the perspective and even the depth of field of the original photo.
• Doing so will install the Creative Suite control panel on your computer.
• Use the left and right bracket keys on your keyboard to resize the Remove Tool’s brush.

Check out some fresh sample photos and see how the image quality looks. This is one more tool, or rather a set of tools, and it is indeed a game changer when you try it out. As noted it’s not perfect but it’s powerful enough to hint at the future. So AI is not a “tool” I want to use to enhance my creativity or get better pictures, because it’s the antithesis of photography as I see it. Of course it is, but probably not of photography; not the one I’m interested in anyway. By standing on the shoulders of others who have gone before.
